As you may already know, or not, I am a seasoned veteran who has watched hundreds of different anime shows. amongst these shows, I’ve always found I enjoyed Sonny Boy the most.

Why Sonny Boy?#

Today I rewatched the anime for the second time in my life, and noticed a lot more than the first time. This time I noticed one theme in particular, Optimistic Nihilism.

Before I go on and discuss this though, perhaps I should explain the premise of the anime. A group of middle school students suddenly find their school building transported into a dark void of another dimension. Many of the students awaken unique supernatural powers, which stem from their personality. As the students attempt to form a society, establish rules, and navigate strange new worlds, they come across different stories, and philosophical concepts which challenge them in different ways.

I really don’t want to spoil the show so I won’t go deep into it, but I really enjoyed how the story embraces my favorite concept in life, “Life is meaningless, but that meaninglessness is what makes you free.”

The reason I find this so significant is because it tells me that I am the one who molds my life into the shape I want. Of course this is obvious, but it is the obvious we often don’t think about clearly, and the show just makes me feel at home.
